Situated at 70 degrees north, Hammerfest is considered the northernmost town in the world and the gate to the Barents Sea. Here we have an active urban community, a lot of culture and a beautiful nature.
Northern Norway is known for it´s rough and varied climate. The landscape changes from alpine mountains and narrow fjords, with thriving coastal communities, to endless tundra and wilderness.
Hammerfest is situated on the island of Kvaløya and offers an untouched countryside, exciting history and open landscapes. The council of Hammerfest covers an area of about 844 km2 and offers great opportunities for mountain hiking.

What to wear? Hammerfest is situated in the arctic and it is never really warm. Be sure to bring long sleeved jumpers and trousers all year around. Hat, scarf and gloves is always useful.
Travelling to Hammerfest is done by plane. From Oslo via Tromsø to Hammerfest airport, situated 5 minutes drive from the city center. As an artist in residence at Dansearena nord this is the travel route we will book for you.
You may also travel from Oslo to Alta Airport followed by a two hours bus drive over the beautiful mountain area called Sennalandet.
Travelling without flying
If you chose the Coastal steamer, the travel is longer, more expensive but very beautiful. The Coastal steamer travels the coast of Norway from Bergen til Kirkenes. There are no trains in Northern Norway, but you can take a night train from Gothenburg in Sweden to Kiruna, and from there a new train to Narvik in Norway. From there you can take one bus to Tromsø (approx 6 hours) and from there to Alta (approx 8 hours) and from there to Hammerfest (approx 2 hours) .
