Performing Arts Relay Canada

Open Call for Artistic Research: Performing Arts Relay Canada

Datoer:
11. november 2018 - reisedag Norge-Canada
12. - 15. november 2018 - Performing Arts Relay
15. - 17. november 2018 - Seminar: Articulating Artistic Research

Sted: School of Creative and Performing Arts, University of Calgary.

Partnerne i Performing Arts Relay er: Dance Atelier Reykjavik, Iceland, Dansearena nord, Norway, Seachange Lab, Denmark, School of Creative and Performing Arts at University of Calgary, Night Swimming Theatre, Toronto.

Performing Arts Relay is dedicated to discovering and exploring performing arts processes, developing new ideas, methods, dialogues and partnerships, and to try out groundbreaking new ways to use artistic methods and the ways in which art produces knowledge.

The project is structured as a relay where each partner hosts joint labs, involving the partners, guest artists, researchers and other professionals. The results and ideas from the labs are collected by a documentation team from Seachange Lab and will be published on a project website, a digital knowledge bank.

The purpose of Performing Arts Relay is to develop and qualify performing artists and their work methods; to produce concrete knowledge about the way in which artistic processes can inform and develop other areas of research and non-artistic professions; and to investigate how artistic processes can be used as tools in other professions, and models for new practices and new ways of thinking.

The Relay Labs bring together artists, scientists and other professionals to experiment with artistic practice and discover new paths of knowledge, exchange and collaboration between the different fields.

The focus of this year’s Articulating Artistic Research Seminar is context: that is, how the environments in which Artistic Research is conducted inspire, facilitate, determine, restrict and otherwise define what can be asked, explored, discovered and imagined. Participating artistic researchers will be asked to articulate what they do and how they do it as a reflection of the contexts in which they practice.

‘Context’ in this instance is understood as a multifaceted situation: personal and communal backgrounds, training, education, institutional and other affiliations, material conditions and culture are just the most obvious of determinants. Further, through the systematic integration and exchange within and between SYMBIONT’s collaborating organizations, participants will experience the transposition of their familiar practices, knowledges, methods and objectives, and will explore the emergent potential to be found in all ‘border crossings.’
